Coronavirus: Maryland and Virginia Extend April 15 Tax Payment Due Date
As was announced previously, due to the COVID-19/Coronavirus Pandemic, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has decided to extend the April 15, 2020 deadline for the payment of most taxpayer’s Tax Year 2019 Federal taxes due.
Maryland Delays Income Tax Payment Due Dateg
In a corresponding decision, the Comptroller of Maryland has delayed the date for tax payments for the Tax Year 2019 Maryland taxes due in 2020. Similar to the IRS, Maryland will allow taxpayers an additional 90 days to make payments on their 2019 tax returns. No interest or penalties will be accrued if the taxpayers make the payment by July 15, 2020. However, it is important to note, that just like the IRS, this is only for the payments of the 2019 tax liability, and taxpayers still must file their tax returns.
Virginia Delays Income Tax Payment Due Date
In a corresponding decision, the Commonwealth of Virginia has announced that it will allow individual and corporate taxpayers until June 1, 2020 to make payment on their Tax Year 2019 Virginia taxes. Once again, the filing deadline is not being extended, only the ability to pay at a later date. Unlike the IRS Virginia will not be waiving interest, so if taxpayers are able to make those payments, they are encouraged to do so. Businesses that have Virginia sales tax returns due on March 20, 2020 can make a request for a 30-day extension. If the request is filed then business can file on April 20, 2020 without any penalties.
DC Delays Sales Tax Payment Due Date
The District of Columbia has put into place a delay of the payment of sales taxes for retailers, restaurants and other businesses. If the sales tax return was due on February 29, 2020 or March 31, 2020, the penalties and interest will be waived if paid by July 20, 2020. It has also extended the filing of corporate biennial reports, if due this year, until June 20, 2020. No decision has yet to be made with regards to any other tax filing or payments due for individuals or businesses. The District of Columbia has also added in a special provision to provide for a Public Health Emergency Grant. If businesses submit an application for the grant and are within the necessary parameters of the grant guidelines, they may receive a grant to assist in the payment of certain business expenses.
Regardless of the extension of the tax payment due date, it is important for taxpayers to file all of their Federal and State tax returns as soon as possible. If taxpayers fail to promptly address issues raised by the State or the IRS, it may be impossible for a tax lawyer to undo all the damage in the future.
